Renzo Piano dedicated his efforts to restoring the natural connection between the city and the sea in a vast, nearly deserted area. Despite the area’s proximity to the sea, the visual and environmental relationship was obscured. The RPBW project aimed to rectify this by creating an artificial hill in the southern part of the area, forming a park with a sloping surface that culminates with the Cultural Center, offering a magnificent view of the open sea. iGuzzini provided the interior lighting and exterior elements for the garden, some of which were standard production items and others were specifically designed for the project. The library was conceived as a space for open and shared enjoyment of knowledge. The reading room, enclosed in glass, is situated at the top of the building, offering a transparent, square-shaped space with a 360-degree view of Athens and the sea. This building seamlessly merges both opera and library facilities, with a public area, known as the Agora, serving as the access point and connector between the two key features. The opera wing consists of two auditoria, with one accommodating 450 seats dedicated to traditional operas and ballets, and the other seating 1,400 for more experimental performances. The library is not just a place for learning and preserving culture but also serves as a public resource, providing a space where culture is truly accessible for sharing and enjoyment.
